Getting started

Why now is the right time to start a YouTube channel

YouTube is growing and will likely become even more important over the next 5–10 years. The platform no longer competes only with other video platforms, but also with traditional TV for people's time, attention and trust.

That's why I think it's a great time to start a YouTube channel. There's still huge potential, both in the Swedish and the international market.

Whether you're a politician, journalist, activist or expert in your niche, YouTube can be a way to get your ideas out, build an audience and create opportunities that might otherwise be hard to come by.

YouTube is no longer just entertainment

YouTube has changed a lot in recent years. Today people don't just watch funny clips and entertainment – they also watch documentaries, vlogs, interviews with politicians and social analysis. The platform is also widely used for learning new things – everything from how to lay flooring to how to style your hair or do your makeup before an office party.

At the same time, more and more people watch YouTube on their big TV screens. For many, the platform has become an alternative to traditional TV.

According to figures from 2025, YouTube also overtook traditional TV in daily reach in Sweden. Roughly 8 out of 10 Swedes use YouTube, and around 1 in 3 watch every day.

That says a lot about the potential that exists there.

AI makes it easier to get started

Starting a YouTube channel is easier than ever. With today's AI tools, even a solo creator with limited resources, or a smaller company, can go far.

Much of the work of editing, subtitling and translation can now be streamlined or partially automated with various AI programs. That means you don't need a whole production team behind you to create good content.

You don't have to invest a lot of money in cameras and microphones at the start either. Today's smartphones have cameras and features good enough to get you going with the equipment you already have.

The most important thing, after all, isn't having the most expensive equipment – it's having something interesting to say and knowing how to tell it.

YouTube can give you more income opportunities than you think

Making money on YouTube isn't just about payouts from the platform.

YouTube has reported that the number of channels earning at least $100,000 a year from TV screen viewing increased by more than 45 percent in one year. That shows there's a growing market for content that people watch on their TVs.

But ad revenue is far from the only opportunity.

You can sell your expertise and services, promote products through links in your videos, collaborate with companies or gather your most engaged followers in a paid membership where you offer exclusive content.

These are just some of the possibilities. How you make money depends on your niche, your audience and what you can actually offer them.

So what are you waiting for?

The opportunities on YouTube are many, and I believe they'll keep growing. But that doesn't mean success comes overnight. It takes a clear idea, a well-thought-out strategy and an understanding of what makes people stay and watch.

Still, my advice is simple: don't hesitate. Start your YouTube channel today – if not yesterday.

And if you want to discuss strategies and ideas for your channel, get help developing your story or learn how to edit your videos so viewers actually stay, you're warmly welcome to get in touch.
